5 Important Tips for Setting up Smart Home Security Cameras

Posted on

If you want to keep a watchful eye on your home, one of the best ways to do that is by installing a video surveillance system. With a smart video security camera, you can watch over your home remotely whenever you want.

Tip #1: Keep Your Cameras Visible

Many people wrongly make the mistake of thinking that they need to hide their security cameras. This is actually the opposite of what you want to do. You want your security cameras to be visible. Having visible outdoor security cameras can actually act as a deterrent and can keep burglars away from your home. Burglars don't want to get caught, and if they can see that you have working cameras on your home, they are going to be tempted just to move on.

Tip #2: Keep Them High

You want your cameras to be visible, but you don't want them to be easy to access. You don't want someone to be able to just reach up and cover up the camera, turn it, or spray paint it. You want the camera to be located high enough up that they are hard to reach and hard to tamper with but can still get a good view of your home.

Tip #3: Use Motion Detector Cameras

You don't need your cameras running 24/7, as that generates a lot of videos. Your cameras will be more effective if they are set up to detect motion and then start to record video. You will want to look for advanced cameras that can tell the difference between a swaying tree branch and a person walking up to your home. With advanced motion cameras, you can even program the camera's field of view. With a motion detector camera, you will only get value footage instead of hours' worth of nothing happening.

Tip #4: Consider the Power Source

Fourth, you are going to want to consider the power source for your cameras. You can use a battery-powered camera if you are willing to get up and change the battery every time that it dies. If you want the cameras to have a steady source of power, you will want to hardwire them into your home; you are not going to want to run a power cable to an outside outlet; it could easily be unplugged. If you hardwire the electricity, you will want to hardwire the cameras to your internet. If you connect the cameras over Wi-Fi, place it on the radio band with the least equipment on it, either 2.4GHz or 5GHz.

Tip #5: Cover Multiple Angles

Finally, when installing your cameras, you will want to ensure that you cover multiple angles with the cameras. Your front door is a great area to cover, as it gets a lot of traffic. However, it is not the only area you should cover with the camera. You will want to cover other areas around your home, such as ground floor windows and backdoors.
